Maeser Neighborhood Meeting

This Thursday, January 26 at 6:30 pm at the firehouse on 300 South and 700 East.

Provo Parks and Recreation Sports Registration

Our Parks and Rec Department hosts a variety of spring youth and adult programs. Registration is open now for Coed Volleyball, Spring Soccer, Track and Field, Rookie League Baseball, Challenger Soccer Camp, Hershey’s Track and Field, Minor League Baseball and Softball, Girls Fast Pitch Softball, Jr. Baseball, Start Smart Baseball, Pitch Hit & Run, and Drop in Kick Ball. Details are available online; you can register by phone at 801-852-6600 or online at http://sports.provo.org. You can also become familiar with the new concussion policy here.

UDOT

Work on University Avenue for the Central Utah Pipeline will stop around March 1st and move to 9th East in Provo, where they will work through the summer. A temporary coat of blacktop will be put on University until to serve until they return to that section in the fall to finish the project up to the mouth of the canyon. They will attempt to do the piping in front of the charter school at 4200 N when the school is not in session.

Mobile Watch

There will be a Mobile Watch Meeting on Wednesday, January 25th at 7 pm in the Police Department Training Room. Also note that the Provo Police Spring 2012 Citizens Academy will start February 15th.

School District Leadership

Provo Superintendent Randy Merrill resigned/retired earlier this month. Bob Gentry has been named as an interim superintendent while the school board conducts a national search for a permanent replacement. At their first meeting in the selection process is this morning (January 24th) at 7:30 am in the PDC, Richard Stowell from the Utah School Boards Association is helping them develop a timeline and a process to involve the community. A survey will probably be forthcoming, but you can contact the board members at any time with your comments and suggestions. Their contact information is available on the Provo School District’s website here.

FrontRunner Update

Keep your fingers crossed. It looks like the FrontRunner express train system that will run up to Salt Lake (and is already in operation from Salt Lake to Ogden) will open THIS December. Provo Mayor John Curtis blogged about it here with links to a Salt Lake Tribune article and an overhead drawing of how the transit station and parking will be laid out.

BYU Housing Upgrade

BYU is tearing down Heritage Halls in stages to construct more new apartments in the same style as those built where Deseret Towers used to be. See the Deseret News article here, and the much more in depth BYU Magazine article here. With VERY limited parking, students are being encouraged to not bring their cars to campus if they want to live there. The area is designed to be pedestrian friendly, public transportation will be available, and Hertz will off car rentals for about $8 per hour for those who really need a car for short periods of time. Students who still feel they must have a car will be able to park over in the stadium lot.

City Emails

Instead of waiting for some neighborhood chair to get around to finally sending on information, the city is encouraging residents in provo to sign up for city emails. About once a month, the city will send you an email with updates, meeting cancellations, and other news that has developed since the newsletters (sent out as an insert with Provo water/electricity bills) are sent out. To sign up, go here and enter your address.

Neighborhood Meetings

Every response to the question of whether to put off another meeting till next year was in the affirmative. So there was no meeting tonight and will not be in December, though please feel free to email and keep in touch with any comments or concerns.

Lights Out

Not all the streetlights in our neighborhood are working. Please note what ones are having problems and send me their addresses and a description of what is wrong (completely out, sputtering/flickering, etc) and I will make up a list to report to the city.

Lights On

On December 3rd there will be a Santa Run 5K from 4:30-5:30, finishing downtown, a Parade of Lights from 5:30-6:30 pm, and a Lights-On Ceremony from 6:30-7:00 pm. The Utah Regional Ballet will be performing the Nutcracker from December 10-20 at 2 and 7:30 pm. Check out the Covey Center’s website here for a complete listing of those and other performances at http://www.coveycenter.org/.

Deck the Halls Downgrade

Just found out the city does not plan on lighting the trees downtown for the holidays this year. If you have an opinion on this, you can send comments to me at hillamdr@hotmail.com and I’ll forward them on.

Choir Performances

Timpview’s Choral Christmas Concert will be on Thursday, December 8th, while Centennial Middle School’s Christmas Concert will be on December 9th. Both are free to the public. With the Tabernacle gone, there will be a Messiah Sing-along at the Provo Community United Church of Christ on 175 North University on Monday, December 5th at 7 pm with singers from UVU. That location will also hold a Gallery Stroll with hundreds of nativity scenes on display December 2 from 6-9 pm, as well as a variety of Advent services.

Officer Retirement

Today was a retirement party for Sergeant Richard Dewey, and next Tuesday, November 22nd, there will be a reception for Captain David Bolda for his 35 years of dedicated service. The reception will be held from 12-2 at the Covey Center, 425 W. Center Street.

Elections

Gary Garrett was elected to be the new city-wide city council member, and was appointed to fill the current vacancy in the council until his elected term begins.

Municipal Council Actions

Most of the items for last Tuesday’s Work and Study Sessions were forwarded to the December 6th Council Meeting. In the main meeting, Gary Garrett was sworn in; $50,000 was appropriated in the Library fund for operational expenses in the fiscal year ending June 30, 2012; $2,144,000 was transferred from the Energy Fund to the Debt Service Fund for telecom debt service payments; approximately .39 acres located at 55 South Freedom was added to the Surplus Property list; an amendment to codify a process for determining mayoral compensation was continued to December 6; next year’s meeting schedule was approved; and the election results were accepted and certified.

Municipal Council Agenda (partial)

#2 on the agenda is the historic home with the gingerbread trim, beautiful but unfortunately not in great repair, behind where the old Catholic church was torn down. Note the different location for this meeting.

Municipal Council Meeting Agenda
